Who we are

Every day, 5 UK police officers have to break the news to 5 UK families, that their loved one has died in a road crash.   A further 70 families every day learn that their loved one has been seriously injured, with many suffering brain damage, paralysis or limb loss.

Brake is a national charity dedicated to preventing these road deaths and injuries from happening and also provides support for people bereaved or injured further to road crashes.   Our work includes educating different road users – from children and their parents, to young people learning to drive, to professional drivers – through resources, training and events.

What we do

We co-ordinate national Road Safety Week each November and provide free community training on different road safety topics including young driver safety.

Our support division is the national provider of support for road crash victims – helping families whose lives have been devastated by a sudden death or serious injury.  It offers emotional support and practical information through a helpline and through support literature that is handed out by police following every fatal road crash in the UK.

How you can support Brake:

There are lots of ways you can support Brake.

At Brake we believe that no one should be killed or hurt in road crashes and that everyone has the right to make safe and healthy journeys where they live.

Schools, nurseries, childminders, colleges and community groups can all step up for road safety to make our communities safe, nicer and greener, help people to live active lifestyles, and stop need less tragedies before they happen.

Road safety is a great subject which should be just as important to you, as a young person.  After all, you all spend time as a passenger in a car; you are all probably wanting to learn to drive;  and you all cross roads to get around in your community.   Road safety is just as important to you, as it is to actual drivers.

Even the youngest children know something about road safety because everyone uses roads, and road danger affects everyone. It’s also a vitally important subject.  Danger from traffic is also a big factor in whether you are able to walk and cycle to school, to the park or to see friends, and therefore affects your  ability to be healthy and socially active.

Brake has lots of activities that you can be involved in: Beep Beep Days Kids Walk Youth for Brake Road Safety Week

Fundraising is another way that you can get involved.  As a small charity, Brake rely heavily on donations to help us with our life-saving work.  We can work with you to create a fabulously fun fundraiser.
