We are an education charity supporting children in over 100 rural schools in Kenya.
In rural Kakamega County, Kenya, parents make great sacrifices to send their children to school, with education viewed as a pathway to a better future. However, in the community schools that we work alongside, 91% of teachers are untrained, and 85% of school leaders have had no formal training. The schools receive no government funding; work with very limited resources; and are often run by community members without leadership experience.
As a result, many children are in school, but are not learning. One in three Grade 1-3 students in these schools are unable to read a simple word. Without strong foundational literacy, numeracy and life skills, children struggle to progress academically, reducing their chances of completing school and securing stable opportunities in the future.
Pursue is working to change this reality by strengthening school systems so that every child has the opportunity to learn and thrive.
What we do:
Teacher Training:
We provide regular workshops, school-based coaching, and communities of practice for teachers so that lessons are well-planned, engaging and fun for children.
Literacy support:
Our mobile library visits schools regularly to loan out books in an area where 70% of children do not have a single story book at home and have no other place to access books. We also support schools to set up reading intervention schemes; teach phonics effectively; and use literacy resources in the classroom to aid learning.
School Leadership:
A strong school leader has the power to transform an entire school. Through workshops, coaching, and leadership networks, we equip school leaders with the skills and support they need to create thriving schools, empower their teachers, and ensure every child feels safe, happy, and engaged in meaningful learning.
Safeguarding:
We provide training and advocacy on children’s rights and positive discipline practices for teachers, parents, children and community members, so that schools become places where children can learn without fear.
