To give relief or assistance in such form as the society shall determine, by granting allowances, gifts, loans, pensions and annuities to and by receiving, maintaining and supporting in any home or institution belonging to or managed by the society, distressed members of the theatrical profession and their wives, children, widows, orphans and dependants, provided that they are not members of the council and by making grants or loans to or otherwise assisting any home or institution devoted solely to the welfare of such persons.
