Housing & Support

Homelessness is a complex issue.  People find themselves homeless for a variety of reasons and the help they need to improve their situation is specific to each individual.  There is no quick fix.

Our strategy to combat local homelessness is to provide people with individually based support solutions that aim to keep them safe from homelessness over the long-term.  Providing a safe place to stay is just the beginning: it is personal support and guidance that we believe really changes lives.

Youth Work

Townsend Youth Club offers twice-weekly open-access sessions for young people aged 11-16 years on Monday and Thursday evenings from 6pm to 8.30pm.

The project aims to engage young people in meaningful activities in their own neighbourhood. Youth workers provide support on topics such as healthy relationships, emotional resilience and CV writing.

In addition we run the Chatterbox project. This is a youth action project run by young people with disabilities aged 11-25 years old from Bournemouth, Poole and other parts of Dorset. https://www.ymcabournemouth.org.uk/youth/the-chatterboxes-disability-action-group/

Health & Wellbeing

YMCA Bournemouth manages two fitness facilities.

The Junction Sports & Leisure Centre is at the very heart of the Broadstone local community and aims to deliver quality facilities and services that cater for the health, fitness and leisure needs of the whole family.

We also run the exclusive Bayside Fitness Club.  Enjoy pushing your limits in our fully equipped gym, have fun whilst getting fit in any of our 50+ Group exercise classes or relax and enjoy some me time in our fabulous sauna and steam room.

Family & Relationship Support

Activities/services run by the YMCA Bournemouth include our Child Contact Centre and Full Circle Counselling.

In addition, classes/sessions for both children and adults are run each week including, baby massage, sensory groups, dance and football.  A variety of dance classes, keep fit and yoga sessions are available for adults during the day and evenings.

How you can support YMCA Bournemouth:

We’re thrilled you’ve decided to fundraise for YMCA. It’s really easy to find a way to make a difference, and whether your event is big or small, every bit counts.

Here are a couple of ideas.

  • Teddy bears’ picnic – If you go down to the woods today, you could raise lots of money for families in need of our support – by inviting all your friends to a picnic. Teddy bears aren’t compulsory, but they could add some fun.
  • Give it up – Could you go for a month without sugar or, worse, social media? Maybe cheese, chocolate or fizzy drinks is the thing you’d miss most? Whatever it is, take a rain check on this pesky pleasure in exchange for sponsorship from mates, then watch the pennies (rather than the pounds) pile on.
  • Sponsored silence – Ever wanted a bit of peace and quiet to get on with the task at hand? Suggest a day of sponsored silence at your school and don’t forget to charge penalty fees for slip ups.
  • Library service with a difference – Search your bookshelves for those paperbacks you’ll never read again and share them with school mates – for a fee and watch the pounds line up.
  • The Chatterboxes, a group of disabled young people, put on a variety show for friends and family. They charged an entrance fee and sold delicious home made cakes and soft drinks. https://youtu.be/KJxfOKTFbms
  • You could ask your school whether its sixth form could take part in a Sleep Easy.

    Here’s how it works:

    • Students: Sixth-form students seek sponsorship, build shelters out of cardboard boxes, and spend the night (in a safe environment at the school/college) ‘sleeping rough so others don’t have to.’
    • YMCA Support: We provide comprehensive guidance, set up the fundraising platform, and supply all the materials and presentations your institution needs to make the event a success.
    • Benefits: Students enjoy raising awareness and funds to combat homelessness, staff value the team-building and educational aspects, and everyone finds the experience rewarding and impactful.
