What we do

To avoid the worst impacts of climate change, we must reduce global greenhouse gas emissions to net-zero by mid-century, all while increasing energy access to billions of people living in energy poverty. It’s a massive challenge and the timeline is daunting, but there is HOPE!

With a deep understanding of policy, science, and technology innovation, Clean Air Task Force (CATF) is working to rapidly reduce emissions while advancing bold climate solutions that can truly make a difference. CATF is a global nonprofit organization with 25 years of internationally recognized experience working to safeguard against the worst impacts of climate change. We have a fierce commitment to fully exploring all potential solutions and the bold ideas needed today to solve the climate crisis.

CATF defines climate and air pollution problems at their root cause. We stay grounded in facts and science. We look for the biggest levers of change and realistic, scalable solutions. We build partnerships to solve problems, but we are not afraid to challenge conventional wisdom about technologies or policies.

CATF started in 1996 with seven staff and a specific goal: reducing carbon emissions from United States power plants. We worked to put in place regulations that are saving tens of thousands of lives, while helping to retire a third of the nation’s coal plants. Twenty-five years later, CATF has become an international organization that continues to grow, with over 100 experts and a scope that now extends to nearly everything related to climate and energy.

Our approach

CATF’s approach is centered on four key areas:

  • Communicate the size of the climate problem and the necessary solutions.
  • Make available the full suite of emissions reduction options – like advanced renewables, zero-carbon fuels, carbon management, advanced nuclear, and superhot rock – at an affordable cost.
  • Change business models to include manufacturable energy solutions that can be deployed anywhere quickly.
  • Change government policy to develop, demonstrate, and scale-up the technologies and systems needed to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
Our future

With the support of our donors and partners, we will hold the line against attacks on clean air and climate protection rules, advance zero-carbon technologies and innovative energy policy, and overcome the climate challenges facing our planet.

How you can support Clean Air Task Force:

CATF has a group of dedicated young donors (the youngest is 5!) and we are so inspired by them.

Young people are current and future leaders of the climate vision and many feel inspired by CATF’s work and have donated their allowance, their bar/bat mitzvah money, their birthday money, or asked for donations to CATF in place of birthday, Christmas, or graduation gifts. Some have created fundraisers for CATF, ranging from online fundraisers sent around to friends and family to classes of students organizing to hold bake sales, hot cocoa/lemonade sales, dances, and other events to raise money for CATF.

Young people can also connect with us on social media, share our messages and become active participants in our mission. CATF has content on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube that gives opportunities for people to dive deeper into CATF’s work. At CATF we ask hard questions around industrial decarbonization and hard-to-electrify sectors. The more people know about the challenges around solving climate change, the faster we can develop a broad range of solutions! We also encourage young people to send us messages and videos to ensure they have a voice in this critical space. Hearing from our young supporters informs and inspires our staff and creates a shared vision for a future where we can live in healthy communities and breath clean air.

Even if you are not yet at voting age, your voice matters. Look at Greta Thunberg! Write letters to local, state, and national leaders about your climate concerns and creative ideas on how to solve problems in your city, state, or region. Call them to action to protect your future and the future of our planet. Encourage your friends and family members to write letters, too, and talk to them about climate change. Create and circulate petitions to drive change on climate issues that are important to you. Start a sustainability club at school and work towards making your school more environmentally conscious.

Young people have a powerful voice and influence and are essential to climate action. You will be the ones living with the impacts of climate change and have the right to be involved in decisions and actions that will affect your future. Now is the time to act: voice your opinions, hold leaders accountable, and donate your time and money to causes you care about. CATF couldn’t do our work without the support of all our donors, and we appreciate the dedication of our young supporters to our mission.
