The Education for the Children (EFTC) Foundation has been helping young people and families in Jocotenango, Guatemala since 2003. Our goal is to provide quality education and all-around care to those in need. We currently support nearly 600 students, from kindergarten through to university age, with most of them attending our School of Hope.
What We Do
At EFTC, we understand that poverty can create many obstacles that make it hard for students to complete their education. That's why we offer more than just classroom learning. Our holistic approach means we look at every aspect of a student's life to help them succeed. This includes:
Quality Education: Ensuring every child has access to great teachers and learning materials.
Nutritious Food: Providing healthy meals so students can focus and learn better.
Healthcare: Offering medical support to keep students healthy and ready to learn.
Social Support: Helping families with the challenges they face so children can stay in school.
Our Mission
We aim to remove the barriers that prevent children from completing their studies and to give them the skills and knowledge they need for a brighter future. By supporting students from a young age all the way through university, we help them build better lives for themselves and their families.
Why It Matters
Jocotenango is a very poor area where many children face tough challenges like abuse, neglect, and violence, which can make it hard for them to stay in school. Many kids have little support at home and rely on us to be their support system. Child labour is unfortunately common in Guatemala, and without our help, many students would end up working low-paying jobs on the streets. At EFTC, we believe every child deserves the chance to learn, grow, and succeed.
Why Partner With Us?
Make a Real Difference
By partnering with us, you'll see exactly how your efforts help. We're a small charity focused in Jocotenango, Guatemala, so you get to see the direct impact of your support.
Learn and Share Languages
Our students speak Spanish, but they also learn English from a young age. It’s a great chance for your students to practice Spanish in real life or for everyone to learn some new words!
Exciting Cultural Exchange
Guatemala is full of fascinating history, like the ancient Mayan civilisation, and unique geography with nine active volcanoes! You could bring your lessons to life with real stories from our school.
Get Involved and Stay Connected
We love to work closely with our partner schools. We provide teaching materials, help plan lessons, and even visit schools in the UK to talk to students in person.
Travel and Volunteer
Older students could even come to Guatemala, volunteer at the school, and get involved in projects.
Activities We Can Help With
Teaching & Presentations
Bring the School of Hope into your classroom with our engaging presentations and materials. Learn about life in Guatemala and the experiences of our students.
Pen Pals
Your class can become pen pals with our students, exchanging virtual letters regularly. It's a fantastic way to learn about each other's cultures and make new friends!
Trivia Games
Host a trivia challenge with questions about life in Guatemala. It’s a fun and interactive way to engage students in learning about a different culture.
Class Video Calls
Set up a virtual meeting between our students and yours. This real-time interaction can make the connection more personal and engaging.
If you have any questions or need more info or help planning, you can reach out to our Comms & Fundraising Manager, Joline-Sophie Klein, at joline.klein@eftcfoundation.org. She will be happy to assist!
How you can support Education For The Children Foundation:
Fundraise
There are loads of fun ways to raise funds for our work! Host a Guatemala-themed fundraiser, a bake sale, or a casual dress day at your school. Every little bit helps!
For a more long-term impact, consider our Student Sponsorship Programme. For £45 a month (£540 a year), you can help a School of Hope student continue their education. Students can help raise this amount throughout the year. You can also sponsor an entire class, covering classroom materials and improving their education for £100 a month.
Spread the Word
Simply talking to friends and family about EFTC and spreading the word can make a huge difference.
