Why we exist

Children and young people should be hungry to learn, but 2.1 million children in the UK are at risk of hunger. That’s four pupils in every class of 30. The magic behind breakfast is so much bigger than the food itself. Working with schools in disadvantaged areas across England and Scotland, Magic Breakfast empowers every child and young person to reach for their dreams and thrive. One breakfast at a time

The magic of breakfast

Children and young people should arrive at school hungry for the day ahead; hungry to learn, to grow, to thrive, never hungry for breakfast. Yet, on average, as many as four pupils in a classroom of thirty may not have access to food. For some, they might not have eaten since their school lunch the day before. Morning hunger is a quiet crisis, but one with loud consequences.

For over 20 years, Magic Breakfast has been there to meet children at the school gates with more than a plate or bowl of food. Our breakfasts ensure every child and young person is nourished and feels empowered, valued, and ready to learn. The magic goes far beyond the food.

The magic is in the calm as a child walk through the school doors and is greeted warmly by name. It’s the laughter shared over toast, the quiet chats with trusted adults, the small moments to play, settle, and feel they truly belong. For children facing uncertainty, it is a rare moment of stability. For families navigating poverty, it is a non-stigmatising, dignified start to the day. A reliable space where care, connection, and community come together to support wellbeing and readiness to learn. Nourishment beyond nutrition, and it’s essential.

Lasting change

Each school morning, we provide nutritious breakfasts to hundreds of thousands of children and young people, and we’re also calling for something bigger: a long-term solution to eliminate morning hunger once and for all.

We will continue supporting schools and communities in need right now, while asking deeper questions about what children and young people truly want to feel nourished, supported, and able to thrive. Their voices and experiences will guide how we work to shape the future, helping us navigate uncertainty with purpose and integrity as we journey towards our vision: a UK where every child and young person is nourished, empowered, and thriving.

We will deepen our campaigning, research, and advocacy with politicians and decision-makers, building on two decades of impact. The effects of childhood morning hunger are far-reaching, widening inequality, health issues, and perpetuating cycles of poverty. The magic that happens beyond breakfast has the power to break these cycles. A welcoming smile, a safe space, a sense of belonging; these are not extras. They are essential ingredients in a fairer, healthier society.

We're transforming lives one breakfast, and one moment of connection, at a time. Magic Breakfast cannot eliminate child morning hunger alone. Real, lasting change will take all of us working together.
