About us
Renewable World develops and implements off-grid renewable energy solutions using solar power, biogas, and improved cooking technologies to bring renewable energy resources to the most remote and underserved communities in Nepal and Kenya.
Our mission is to transform the lives of the poorest people by improving access to clean and affordable energy; empower them to achieve sustainable and resilient livelihoods; and mitigate climate change.
We began in 2007 as the Koru Foundation with the support of individuals within the European Renewable Energy sector with one goal: to act as the link between the sector and the energy-poor communities who are most vulnerable to climate change. Since then, we have evolved and continue to serve those same, last-mile communities we originally set out to help.
What we do
We implement a 'clean energy plus' approach that helps improve incomes, health and education in the poorest communities in Kenya and Nepal, by
installing a range of locally sourced, small-scale renewable technologies to provide the energy and water that communities need.
We use solar and other renewable technologies to pump water and power enterprise, schools and health facilities. We then complement this clean energy solution with training in climate-smart agriculture, improving income prospects and safe water, sanitation and hygiene. Our growing programmes work through expert local partners to make a big difference to the lives of people living in rural communities.
Our impact
Since 2008, we have reached over 66,000 people with renewable energy technologies and services.
Meet Joshua and Irene
The couple has four kids and manages the neighbourhood convenience store. Previously, the store sold basics including flour, bread, sugar, matches, and kerosene. When power came to their village via a community-managed solar microgrid, they decided to expand. The old convenience store grew to include a small cafe. Further, the electricity allowed them to expand their grocery offerings. Irene now wakes up at 5am to start preparing breakfast for the local fishermen. The cafe is open until 10pm and has led to increased income opportunities.
Joshua continues to make an income from fishing while the extended business hours of the store have meant more time helping Irene with the family business. The couple is excited for the future and the life they will provide for their kids. Irene shared, “through the income we are getting now, we can pay the fees and are able to transfer our eldest daughter to a better school.”
