This year young people from 15 ASSET primary schools across Suffolk have been doing something incredible. These young change-makers have spent the past year leading inspiring food-improvement projects in their schools.
The ASSET Arrows, our pupil parliament, and school councils and eco-councils have been on a mission to ensure all young people have access to healthier school dinners, better mealtime experiences, more sustainable food choices, and less waste. They've held food summits, created school allotments, designed their own menus, and led assemblies to involve their whole school community.
It all began with a powerful question: "Is it fair that adults always decide what children eat?" When the answer was a resounding 'no,' these determined young leaders challenged teachers and parents to empower students to make good choices and lead healthy lives.
Their brilliant work has transformed how schools approach food and, importantly, how adults listen to young voices. Inspired by tour children, ASSET Education will be bringing catering in-house from August 1, 2025. This exciting move will give young people full input on the menu, ensuring it reflects the diverse and delicious recipes they've collected from families across the community.
“This is what great leadership looks like: courage, creativity and care. The kids running the ASSET Arrows prove that when young people are given the chance to lead, they can transform communities. Their work is extraordinary, and they deserve this award.” Jamie Oliver
Now, you can be a part of their incredible journey!
The ASSET Arrows have compiled their very own recipe book, filled with child-approved recipes that they've gathered from their school communities in Suffolk. These recipes underpin the new menu in our schools, and our hope is that by enabling families to create some of the meals that will be on our school dinner menu, they will become more familiar, and children will be encouraged to take up a nutritious cooked dinner.
