This year, Egrets Team in Years 5 and 6 have been working hard to understand the issue of world hunger. We learned that 811,000,000 people around the world are going hungry, and that 99,000,000 children don't have enough to eat. We thought that these huge numbers were even more shocking once we learned that one third of all food produced goes to waste. There is enough food on our planet to feed everyone, so why do so many go hungry?
It is a complicated problem, but the main reasons for world hunger are conflicts and wars, poverty, and the effect of climate change. Governments, charities and individuals are doing what they can to help, sometimes by providing emergency food aid, and sometimes by trying to change things in the long term - for example, by creating crops that can better resist hot and damp conditions, or making sure that farmers are paid a fair price for their crops.
We can all make a difference, and Egrets are starting here - we are holding a fun day for Years 5 and 6 to raise money for our chosen charity, Action Against Hunger. There will be 4 fun activities to choose from - Egrets will be running a bottle flip challenge! We can't wait to see how much we can raise - let's tackle hunger together!
We’re an international charity committed to saving the lives of malnourished children and supporting their families to beat hunger.
