The creation of a dynamic, multipurpose play structure within the school's play area. It will be an engaging space where children can explore, play, relax and learn- accessible and enjoyable for all age groups.
The project will be located on the existing mound to the west of the playground, a prominent position that is clearly visible from the school grounds and lies directly along the route from the car park. Over the years, several attempts have been made to landscape this area and create a more engaging environment for pupils and staff. Currently, the space features a large concrete tube beneath the mound, with various pieces of play equipment scattered around. Two semi-mature oak trees provide height and shade, contributing to the character of the area. However, the mound is presently out of bounds and enclosed by temporary plastic fencing following the removal of a sleeper wall that had been retaining the soil.
The new design should transform the space into an attractive and welcoming feature of the school grounds-one that appeals to pupils, staff, and both current and prospective parents. It must be durable, thoughtfully designed, and easy to maintain over time.
Proposal
Front View - The centerpiece of the mound will be a raised, multifunctional play platform that emphasizes the site's elevation and serves as a visual and interactive focal point within the playground. Directly in front, a stage area will be introduced, framed by a tiered amphitheatre of steps that gently descend to playground level. These steps will be constructed from durable robinia hardwood and fitted with rubber grass-saver mats, promoting a lush, green appearance while allowing grass to grow through. Surrounding the mound, a low oak sleeper wall will be installed, complete with appropriate drainage to ensure long-term stability and resilience. In the open space at the front of the mound, three compact reading dens will be positioned-offering a calm, sheltered area for quiet play and reading activities.
Rear View - The rear of the mound is where the fun begins, creating an exciting and visually engaging space that captures pupils' attention as soon as they arrive at school. A climbing wall will lead up to the raised playhouse at the back, with a climbing net providing an alternative route from the side. Both areas will have loose-fill safety surfacing beneath them. Around the base of the mound, a series of lower-level balancing and stepping activities will be incorporated, complete with safety ropes and netting where necessary. Rubber grass-saver mats will be installed around the equipment to protect the ground, enhance durability, and allow the grass to grow through. From the raised platform, pupils can exit via a plastic tube slide on the right-hand side. Additional play elements, such as a trap door with a rope ladder or a firefighter's pole, can provide further access to the space below. A balustrade or netting barrier to the front will ensure the play area is safely enclosed.
