The Langley First School Big Read 2026

At Langley First School, reading is at the heart of everything we do. To celebrate 2026 being the National Year of Reading, we have set ourselves an ambitious target alongside Friends of Langley to raise £4,000 throughout 2026 for our phonics and guided book library, which is used by all children in the school.

The Langley Big Read is the first step in a new year-long mission, and there will be plenty of other fun opportunities to get involved throughout the year.

From now until 2 April, we’re setting you a series of challenges, which you can tick off on your challenge card. They include:

  • try a new genre
  • listen to an audio book
  • visit a library new to you (we’re hoping this could make a nice day out!)

The children have until 2 April to hand their completed challenge cards into their teacher. All completed challenge cards will be entered into a prize draw.

During the readathon, children are encouraged to read as much as they can in a way that suits them best. All reading counts, and every child can take part, regardless of age or reading level.

This may include:

  • Sharing bedtime stories
  • Reading picture books, comics, or chapter books
  • Listening to audiobooks
  • Reading with parents, carers, or grandparents (being read to counts just as much as reading yourself)

We’re also keen to get our parents, carers and wider Langley community involved. Our teachers will be sharing their book recommendations on Dojo and our social media pages throughout the campaign. We would love you to get involved too, sharing your own book recommendations in the school yard or in the comments on Dojo.

Although we’re hoping this challenge will raise money towards this, what’s more important to us is to harness a love of learning. We want children to come away from this challenge having read something new and feeling proud of what they have achieved.

Children are invited to raise whatever they can by taking part, but not raising anything is ok too. Please only donate if you are able to.
