From Loss to Light: Peter’s Song for Herts Mind

This summer, Hertswood Academy is raising money for mental health charity, 'Herts Mind Network', who deliver essential mental health support in Hertfordshire.

To launch this fundraising event, Hertswood's inspirational Headteacher, Peter Gillett, has written an original song called 'Summertime Eyes' which he performed for our Year 7 students. [Scroll down for the video!]

As well as being a headteacher in our wonderful academy, Peter is a songwriter and multi- instrumentalist (vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards, etc.), writing and recording this track himself. Peter and his brother sadly lost both parents (Susanne and Michael) to mental health crises. This music video includes the only video footage of Peter with both his parents in the early 1970s.

Peter's message to our community -- "You are not alone. A moment of crisis is temporary. Hold onto hope; it's a powerful force. Reach out to others and make small steps towards your future because brighter days are ahead. You are far stronger than you think."

We are determined that Hertswood Academy raise as much money as possible for the brilliant Herts Mind Network. Our target is £1,000 by the end of June, and Peter has promised that if we reach this target, he will record another performance of another song before the end of the summer to raise money for another important charity!

Update 29th May -- We have been blown away by the overwhelming level of support the campaign has seen in just the first days! With Peter now committed to another song next month, we would be delighted to raise as much money as possible for Herts Mind, so are looking to a new target of £5,000. To further the cause, Peter has recorded an impromptu video for a track he recorded in 2002 along with staff and students from Wembley High School. Find it below!

“Donation in memory of Pete and Martin's mum, who I was absolutely devastated to lose, especially in the tragic manner that we did. A truly lovely woman who single-handedly raised her two wonderful sons to be fine upstanding pillars of the community after the loss of her husband. RIP to them both xxx”
