Help Us Restore the Tufnell Park Primary Pond

Since November 2021, a dedicated group of around 50 parents, children, and several teachers have transformed a once-abandoned 400–500 sq. metre wildlife area on the grounds of Tufnell Park Primary School. What was once rubble and overgrowth is now a vibrant pond garden, used by all year groups and home to our thriving Gardening Club.

This special space offers hands-on, seasonal activities that connect children—many of whom have limited access to nature—with the outdoors. Over the past three and a half years, it has become an invaluable outdoor classroom for nearly every child at the school. In a dense urban setting like ours, this kind of natural learning environment is incredibly rare.

But now, the pond at the heart of the garden is in trouble.

The pond liner, installed more than 20 years ago, has deteriorated and no longer holds water. This makes it impossible to run pond-dipping activities and affects the habitat for frogs and other wildlife—especially during frogspawn season, when tadpoles become vulnerable to predators due to shallow or stagnant water.

We need to raise £5,000 more to replace the pond liner and rebuild the wooden deck used by children for learning and observation (a total of £9,500). Thanks to the efforts of our volunteer team, we've already secured £4,500 through grants—and we’re continuing to apply for more. Now, we’re turning to our wider school community to help bring us over the finish line.
