When Jack was 11 years old, he saw a video about the drought in Australia and the horrible effect it had on farmers. Jack wanted to do something to help. He spent one evening scratching his head, thinking of different fundraising ideas. Eventually he decided that everyone loves a dress up day and came up with the idea of ‘A fiver for a farmer.’
The idea behind ‘A fiver for a farmer’ was that children would come to school dressed up as farmers and bring in $5 (about £3.50) to give to a farmer. Jack sent an email to EVERYONE he knew to get the word out – his friends, their parents, his teachers, newspapers, you name it! He also hung posters around the school and spoke in assemblies.
The day was a huge success and Jack raised a whopping $20,000 (about £15,000). Since then, Jack has continued to raise awareness and money and has reached 1.7million dollars (about £1,250,000)! Jack encourages young people to do the same, saying, ‘Be bold, be brave, go out there on a mission, and tell people what you want to do.’
