When 10-year-old Liam decided he didn’t want to go to summer camp, his dad told him he had to come up with something else to do. Liam decided to do an online treasure hunt where you had to complete challenges to move forward.

The first challenge was to give back to his community. Liam decided to start with the people living right outside his door. He asked his dad to help make sandwiches. Liam and his dad packed the sandwiches they’d made into brown bags, each with a special hand-written note or drawing, loaded up a wagon and walked the streets of his neighbourhood distributing them to the homeless.

Start small, start local…get your friends together and do something that you love to make a difference.’

Liam felt an immediate sense of reward. He said, ‘I’ve seen people who are feeling really down on themselves. But when we hand them a lunch, their faces just light up.’ Liam instantly knew he wanted to keep doing this. So Liam created a GoFundMe page to raise money to keep buying the sandwich ingredients and keep distributing the sandwiches.

He spread the word about what he was doing through friends, family and social media. Donations poured in and people volunteered to help hand out the bags. Liam has gone from distributing 40 bags in his first week to hundreds of bags per week. Liam’s advice for other children is to ‘Start small, start local…get your friends together and do something that you love to make a difference.’
