When Lesein was 11 years old, he learnt about deforestation and climate change. He decided to combine his love for football with his love for nature in a plan called ‘Trees for Goals.’ Every time Lesein scored a goal, he would plant a tree.
He encouraged others to join him, going to schools and villages giving talks about his idea. He made it simple so that anyone, especially young people, could take part. And if everyone played their small part, altogether, it could make a huge difference.
People welcomed the idea with open arms and started following in Lesein’s footsteps. Lesein’s football club and school football team adopted the idea. And he even inspired his basketball team to follow suit, undertaking a similar idea but renaming it ‘Hoops For Trees.’ In the first two years, Lesein planted over 1,400 trees.
Looking forward, Lesein dreams of FIFA adopting his approach and famous football players starting to plant trees for every goal they score. Lesein’s advice to other people who want to get involved and make a difference is to, ‘Remember that everything you do, however small, counts. It is best to start now because we don’t have much time.’
